Cross-Platform Integrations

Integrations with existing systems such as CRM, stock management or booking system will add to the time and complexity of the project.

Branding skill level

A highly experienced web designer is a well-paid role because these people make all the difference between a site that visitors leave immediately and a site that people are immediately attracted to and want to stay on.  The world’s best designers gather at the D&AD awards – you can see some wonderful design and get inspired here: https://www.dandad.org/

Agency Skill level

A sole freelancer will be less expensive than an agency. A sole freelancer cannot have the range of skills that you get with a full agency team which will include: user experience specialist , designers, artworkers, , digital marketing experts and a range of programmers and developers. One of the best in the world is https://www.akqa.com/  If you can afford them, use them !

Content Required

If you are planning a total revamp then you’ll want to plan for a new copy ( words) deck for the website and new imagery – photography, illustration or a mix of both. We offer copywriting services but not photography so you’ll want to budget for this. It is very important not to attempt to recycle the current content you have, this will defeat the objective.

Understand Types of Website design company – from cheap to expensive

DIY Website Software Platforms are the cheapest  – £300 – £1,500 per annum

Wix, Squarespace and other sites allow you to build your website yourself. They’re not free but they are close! Your investment is in your time. These platforms and the sites they create are not suitable for any serious SME in the UK. The websites are great to test a business idea but will be in no way suitable for businesses hoping to do extensive online marketing or offer rich user experience over many pages. They do also have many hidden monthly costs to be aware of.

Freelancer Websites – £750 – £2,500 one-off cost

Websites such as 99 Designs, Fiverr offer a really good service for small or start-up companies. You will meet a freelance web builder/designer who can offer good value. No one person can cover too many bases though so find out if they are more technical or more design focused. Again, these freelancers are not appropriate for a scale UK business seeking professional website build.

Technical agencies  £2,000 +

Small agencies often have a strong technical background and can create designs using templates. This approach has its place but sometimes can be limited by the template so be sure to find out what is possible first. Make sure you are happy with the designs they produce.

Creative Design and Build Agencies £4,500 – £10,000,

This kind of agency will have strong creative and design credentials and will certainly have a design director as well as a technical leader. They may well be used to working alongside another technical agency and so they do not have Google Certified experts in-house. They can build a beautiful website but will likely not be able to ensure it is going to work well with Google.

Good if you are not planning digital marketing but beware the cost of adding Google optimisation later!

Creative Design and Build Agencies with Google Certification £5,500 – £25,000

An agency such as this (The Ambitions Agency is one of these) will have a group of experienced professionals who will work as a team on your project. For SMEs in the UK wanting a business website this is the place to start looking.

At The Ambitions Agency we would have a website planner guide the project and they would work with a design director and a content specialist to keep your messaging on track.

Vitally though they will also work closely with the Google team to make sure your site is built in a way that Google will be able to read easily.

This is very hard to do after your site is built.

These agencies deliver a site that loads quickly, has an immediate appeal to visitors to convert more of them to buyers and a site that works with Google

Digital Agency serving national and international brands £100,000 – £5m

With a staff of hundreds these agencies are able to deliver global projects for multi-national businesses. Typically a project will last indefinitely as one build finishes and an update begins. I used to work for one and remember seeing an invoice for a single page update for a global car company for £14,500!
